WILDWOOD – A woman lying on the Rio Grande Avenue beach suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries when a Police Department pickup truck ran over her on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at around 3:30 p.m., a city official has confirmed.
Deputy Mayor Steve Mikulski, who oversees public safety for Wildwood, confirmed that a police officer was driving the white, F-150 pickup that drove over the woman. Mikulski said she and her boyfriend were apparently visiting the beach when the accident occurred.
“Some good Samaritans tried to help get her out before emergency responders arrived,” the deputy mayor said. “She was medevaced to Cooper (University Hospital) – Camden, I believe.”
No details on the incident have yet been released by the Police Department.
According to a report from 6ABC Action News of Philadelphia, the woman was lying on the beach when the pickup drove over her. The report said other beachgoers called for the driver, reported to be a Class II summer officer, to stop, saying there was someone under the truck. The boyfriend, according to 6ABC, said the woman sustained broken ribs, three fractured vertebrae and an injured lung.
The 6ABC report said emergency responders received a call saying a person was struck by a vehicle. Police have not said who was operating the pickup, which was marked with the Police Department’s logo. A group of men reportedly attempted to lift the truck to remove the victim, who was ultimately freed.
