The Grassy Sound fishing pier, which has been closed for nearly three years due to structural concerns, is set to reopen on Friday, June 13.
The Cape May County commissioners and Middle Township Mayor Chris Leusner will hold a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the reopening at 10 a.m. that day at 13 Old North Wildwood Blvd. East (adjacent to Grassy Sound Marina).
In 2024, the commissioners approved a contract for the rehabilitation of the county-owned pier. It involved the removal of the existing dilapidated pier, replacement of the existing bulkhead and construction of a new pier with improved lighting and signage, Americans With Disabilities Act access and parking and aesthetics upgrades.
Colliers Engineering & Design Inc. provided project management and design consulting services, and South State Inc. was the contractor.
The original pier was built on the remains of the old Grassy Sound Bridge. The fishing pier has been a popular fishing and crabbing destination for generations, and access to it will continue to be free.
The pier has been managed by Middle Township since 2007 through a lease arrangement. The township will provide routine maintenance and service to the site through a shared services agreement with the county.
Commission Director Len Desiderio said, “The Board of Commissioners has been steadfast in our support of great projects that enhance the public’s access to our waterways and support opportunities for affordable, outdoor recreation for residents and visitors alike.”
