NORTH WILDWOOD – Beaches will not be finished in time for Memorial Day weekend, North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello said.
The $1.5 million backpassing project, where sand is trucked from Wildwood’s beaches, was placed on hold this week, as Tropical Storm Arthur forced work stoppage.
“It was 100% the tropical storm. We would have been done this week but had to suspend operations,” Rosenello said.
Entrances at Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets will be closed for the weekend. Those beaches will be accessible during low tide from other entrances, but there will likely not be enough sand to sit during high tide in that several block stretch.
Large stockpiles of sand will remain on the beaches over the weekend.
“We’re not going to rope them off. I think people just need to use common sense,” the mayor said, asked if he was worried about kids getting hurt playing on the sand piles.
Rain is in the forecast for the weekend, and temperatures are only predicted to reach the upper 60s, so it could be a moot point.
“Next weekend it should be done, considering the weather cooperates,” said Rosenello.
