DANLEY, WARREN HOLLIS
Warren Hollis Danley died peacefully in company with his family on June 8th, 2024 in Johnson City, Tennessee, just a few days shy of his 93rd birthday.
Warren had recently relocated from Cape May Court House, New Jersey so he could be closer to family in Tennessee. Though he thoroughly enjoyed his relocation and his new friends at Dominion Assisted Living, his time there only lasted a few weeks. In those few weeks Warren exhibited his trademark optimism, sense of humor, and joy in life. He will be sorely missed by family and friends new and old.
Warren was a Philadelphia native, the third of four children of Hollis and Marian Danley. He was born June 13, 1931 and grew up with older sister Katherine and younger sister Alice. The oldest of the family, Stewart, died at age six before Warren was born. Katherine died in 1995 and Alice continues to enjoy life in Gaithersburg, Maryland. During Warren's adolescence, his family summered in Stone Harbor, New Jersey where he worked many years for Abbott Dairies. During one of these summers he had the good fortune to meet his future wife Janice Osborne of Cape May Court House. While in high school, Warren enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and continued as a reservist while attending Lenoir Rhyne College. After graduation, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Naval Officer. Janice and Warren wed in Cape May Court House in 1955 and then moved to San Diego where Warren was on sea duty, spending time in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Hawaii. In 1961, he was recalled to active duty and assigned to USS HUNT (DD-674) where he was deployed to Europe during the 1961 Berlin Crisis and also participated in the recovery of John Glenn's Friendship 7 spacecraft after his historic 1962 space mission.
Over the years, Janice and Warren welcomed five children; Mark (Liz), Lisa, Jennifer (Trent Roberts), Cliff (Kim), and Ben, while living in San Diego, Baltimore, Maryland, Jacksonville, Florida and Cape May Court House where they resided from 1961 through 1973. While in Cape May Court House Warren was employed at Osborne's TV and Appliances, and served the community as a volunteer firefighter and elected member of the school board. During this time, Janice enjoyed teaching music at Middle Township High School. Warren returned to active duty with the Navy and was assigned to Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio, Treasure Island, California, Washington DC, and Chicago while enjoying a thirty-year Navy career.
Post-Navy retirement, Warren worked for the State of Ohio in job retraining programs while pursuing his woodworking, miniatures, antique auto restoration, and home improvement hobbies. He was fully “employed” throughout retirement although he slowed down a bit after Janice's death in 2013. Warren married again in 2016 to Patricia Penkethman and they resided in Bluffton, SC, and Cape May Court House until 2023.
Our Dad was a cheerful, friendly, positive gentleman who thoroughly enjoyed life. Despite numerous health issues, he maintained a sunny disposition and some of his close friends never knew of his illnesses. He is survived by his five children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral. His body has been cremated and he will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy.
