Daniel B Thompson, II (age 91) of Avalon, NJ, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on June 3rd, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by family and friends.
Dan was born in Cranford, NJ on December 3, 1933 and was the son of John Irvin Thompson and Gwenyth Bruyere Thompson.
Mr. Thompson graduated from the Landon School {Bethesda, MD} in 1952 and from the Washington and Lee University {Lexington, VA} in 1956 where he played soccer, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and earned a BA in Economics. He also completed graduate studies at Cornell University {Ithaca, NY} in 1970.
Between 1952 and 1964 Dan proudly served active duty and reserves in the United States Marine Corps reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. His dedication to our country throughout his life was a source of great admiration to those around him.
Mr. Thompson had a rewarding 38-year career with the Campbell Soup Company from 1956 through 1994. He held a variety of positions including Director of Container Purchasing {Camden, NJ}, Manager of Industrial Engineering and Planning {Camden, NJ}, Assistant Plant Manager {Napoleon, Ohio}, Plant Manager {Chicago, Illinois}, and Director of Procurement {Camden, NJ}.
Dan met his future wife Pamela Diane Yeager in Philadelphia in 1958 and after a loving engagement they were married in Connecticut on September 12, 1959. Over the years Dan and Pam lived in many wonderful places including New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois, South Carolina, and Florida.
Dan truly looked forward to spending time with family at the Jersey Shore, Bellefonte, PA and Fairfield, CT. He also developed many long-lasting friendships while active with the Delran School Board, Old Guard Society, Bay Head Yacht Club, Riverton Country Club, Napoleon Elks Club, Napoleon Rotary Club, Napoleon Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Yacht Club, Vineyards Country Club, Theater Club of Naples, Avalon Yacht Club, Avalon Republican Club, Avalon Seniors Center, Avalon Performing Arts Council, Avalon Home and Land Owners Association, and the Stone Harbor American Legion.
After moving to Avalon, NJ in the 1980s, Dan truly enjoyed boating, playing tennis, riding his bike, reading books at the beach and at the Avalon Public Library, singing in the choir at the United Methodist Church of Avalon, catering to Pam's Himalayan cats and helping her in the garden, and supporting turtle and wetland conservation.
After retiring, he took great pride serving the community through his work with the Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity. He also served as a volunteer boat captain at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida guiding visitors on nature tours along the Gordon River.
Dan was a dedicated and loving son, brother, husband, father, and loyal friend. He is predeceased by his parents and two brothers, John Irvin Thompson, Jr. {Bellefonte, PA} and Owen Bruyere Thompson {Washington, D.C.}. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Pamela Diane Yeager Thompson, daughter Judy Thompson of Perrysburg, Ohio, son Daniel B Thompson III {and wife Kristin} of Cherry Hill, NJ, and by his three adored grandchildren, Lindsey, Lauren and Robert.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Avalon, 3344 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202, where visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service with Military Honors will immediately follow at the Cape May County Veterans' Cemetery, 127 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the United Methodist Church of Avalon, 3344 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202, Phone # 609-967-4204.
