Surfside Pier Closed Briefly Over Reported Gun Incident

POLICE LIGHTS DAYTIME

By Herald Staff

NORTH WILDWOOD – Multiple social media and news outlet reports said police evacuated the Surfside Pier, at 2501 Boardwalk, between 7 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.

ABC Channel 6 in Philadelphia quoted police as saying a man pulled a gun and was taken into custody. No official announcement has come from local police departments.

Published reports also said the Surfside Pier, owned by Morey’s Piers, was closed temporarily at the request of the police. The closure was described as a precaution, with no other explanation. The amusement pier later reopened to the public.

The North Wildwood Police Department created a post on its Facebook page saying it was “aware of an incident occurring in our jurisdiction circulating on social media.”

“The incident resulted in an increase of law enforcement personnel in the area of Morey’s Pier to include evacuation of the pier. That incident has since concluded and there is no threat or concern for public safety. We would like to thank the public for their understanding.”

Other Arrest

North Wildwood police also announced they located a man they had requested the public’s help in finding. Police posted a photo and description of a man seen wearing tan shorts and no shirt, with several tattoos on his arms and chest. The notice included the words, “Please do not approach.” Police were searching for the man in the area of 300 W. 16th Ave., North Wildwood.

Help Still Needed

On June 12, the department posted additional photographs of two suspects involved in an aggravated assault that occurred on June 8. Detectives identified a vehicle, a blue Dodge Ram pickup with black rims, that the suspects were observed operating on the day of the incident.

If anyone has any information regarding the identity of the suspects, please contact the North Wildwood Police Department at 609-522-2411 or email the Detective Division at detectives@nwpd.org. The public can also do so anonymously by using TEXT-A-TIP by texting TIP NWPD, followed by the message, to 888777.
