IFTA, IRP Waivers for Commercial Vehicles Traveling With Relief Supplies to Hurricane Affected Areas Announced

By Press Release

TRENTON — Governor Chris Christie on Sept. 7 announced an Administrative Order temporarily waiving both the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and the International Registration Plan (IRP) requirements for commercial vehicles traveling to the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma as part of disaster relief. The waiver will expedite the process of getting needed relief supplies to the affected areas by suspending the requirement that out-of-state commercial truckers first obtain temporary IRP registration and IFTA license trip permits prior to traveling through New Jersey.
“This is about saving lives and getting people’s lives rebuilt,” said Governor Christie. “Victims of these hurricanes need to know that government red tape will not impede the delivery and arrival of the aid they need.”
While this temporary waiver simplifies the process for out-of-state commercial truckers passing through New Jersey with relief supplies, operators of commercial motor vehicles are still required to comply with the appropriate laws pertaining to safety and commercial driver licensing, including maintaining required insurance.
“We hope that the suspension of these requirements makes it easier for the residents of Texas, Louisiana, Florida and other affected areas to receive the supplies and aid required in a timely manner,” said New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez.
The suspension of IFTA and IRP requirements shall remain in effect until Oct. 1, 2017.
Anyone with questions or concerns regarding this waiver should contact the MVC at (609) 292-6500.
