Cape May Voters Select Council; Ocean City Picks Mayor, Council

CAPE MAY — With three seats opening on City Council here, voters today have seven candidates from which to choose.
The candidates are newcomers Shaine Meier, Alison Bjork, Bill Murray, Jayne Dawn Brautigam Deanna Fiocca and Robert McCafferty Jr. and former councilman Jack Wichterman who served on Cape May City Council from 2002-2004.
Three City Council incumbents announced they were not seeking reelection.
Deputy Mayor Niels Favre, who served four terms, announced just after New Year’s Day he would not be seeking reelection
Councilman David Kurkowski and Councilwoman Linda Steenrod announced their intention to pass up another run for office at a Feb. 3 council meeting.
The situation could open the opportunity for three new members on council to form an alliance and vote as a block, effectively outvoting Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. and Councilwoman Terri Swain who have generally agreed on issues.
Polls are open until 8 p.m. The Herald will be at City Hall beginning at 8 p.m. to post election returns as they are announced.
In Ocean City, voters will select a mayor for a four-year term. Their choice is between Jay Gillian and Michael Hinchman.
For Ocean City Council, there are seven candidates for three four-year terms. Voters will choose between: Michael Allegretto,
Pete Guinosso, Keith Hartzell, Vincent Iannace, Frank McCall, Scott Ping and Jim Tweed.
