CAPE MAY COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAIMS MAY
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH IN CONJUNCTION WITH NAMI ACM

County Board issues proclamation to increase public understanding of the importance of mental health and to promote identification and treatment of mental illnesses.

Cape May Court House, N.J. – May 12, 2022 – The Board of County Commissioners in Cape May County, in recognizing the vital role mental health plays in our overall health, has declared the month of May National Mental Health Awareness Month in Cape May County. The Board of Commissioners issued its proclamation in conjunction with the Atlantic/Cape May (ACM) affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
The Board’s declaration reads in part, “Mental health helps to sustain an individual’s thought processes, relationships, productivity and ability to adapt to change or face adversity. Mental illness adversely affects those abilities and often is life-threatening in nature.” The declaration states, “One in five adults experiences mental illness in any given year” and “suicide is the 10th leading cause of the death in the U.S. and the second leading cause among young adults.”
“Early identification and treatment can make a profound difference in successful management of mental illness and recovery,” the Board of Commissioners goes on to state in its proclamation. If you or a loved one have a mental health condition, you are not alone. Individuals in crisis can text NAMI to 741741 for 24/7 confidential, free crisis counseling.
About NAMI Atlantic/Cape May
NAMI Atlantic/Cape May, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, provides education, advocacy and support for those who suffer from mental health conditions and for families or friends who are challenged by the disabling effect mental illness may have on their loved one. Mental health conditions may often co-occur with substance abuse disorders.
We work to learn more about our local and state mental health systems, how they work, how to use them gainfully and how to change them; follow new research and treatment possibilities; join with similar groups throughout New Jersey and nationwide in identifying and working for improved treatment and resources; advocate for and support legislation to improve programs and research in the field of mental health; and develop adequate aftercare services. NAMI Atlantic/Cape May is a 501C3 non-profit organization.
