DOROTHY MARGARET
Dorothy Margaret “Peg” Hayes of Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday February 22, 2025. She died peacefully at home at the age of 102 surrounded by the love of many family members.
Peg was born in Brentwood, Essex, England on November 6, 1922, to David and Beatrice (Thorne) Wright. Her father died when she was five and she was raised by her mother and extended family members. During WWII she served in the Women's Land Army growing food for the war effort. She came to the United States in July 1945 to serve as the nanny for a family posted to the British Embassy in Washington, DC. There she met her future husband, Herbert Carr, a U.S. Marine. They married in October 1946.
In the early years of their marriage, they moved five times, had two children, and settled in Marlton, NJ in 1950. Herbert used the GI Bill to attend medical school, completing his residency in 1960. They moved with their five children to Rio Grande in Cape May County, NJ. While “Doc” Carr served the community, Peg cared for the family, and they added two more children. The marriage dissolved in 1967 and Peg went to work for the U.S. Coast Guard. Peg returned to school to earn her Practical Nurse license, which she completed in 1973 at age 50. She worked at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Court House until 1982, when she married John Robert “Bob” Hayes, a friend and neighbor from the days in Marlton. They made their home in Marlton and where Peg worked at Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Cherry Hill.
In 1986, Bob and Peg both retired and moved to Port Elizabeth. They were members of the Port Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Peg had extensive training and experience in a variety of needle arts; her favorite by far was quilting. She was an active member of the South Shore Stitchers Quilt Guild making hundreds of quilts, most of which were donated to local charities. Over the years, the blended Hayes/Carr family and the greater community enjoyed numerous gatherings at their Port Elizabeth home; they were well known for their love, generosity, and warm hospitality.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Bob (2015) and her Carr sons Stephen (1961), David (2015), Geoffrey (2021), and Christopher (2024). She is survived by daughters Beverly Carr and Michele Budick; sons Matthew Carr and Michael Carr; stepdaughter Susan Collier; stepson John Robert “JR” Hayes, III; 17 grand-
children; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Port Elizabeth United Methodist Church on Saturday March 1, 2025: visitation at 10:00, service of celebration at 11:00 followed by graveside committal and reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Port Elizabeth United Methodist Church. To send condolences and or tributes, please visit www.hoffmanfuneralhomes.net
