For more than 40 years, the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) has held competitions, organized at the grassroots, district level on a year round basis.
Each district conducts four or more contests per year, and each year the ESA has over 150 competitions along the entire East Coast.
From the local District level top finishers are invited to advance to Region competition (of which there are three), then the top finishers in those championship events are invited to the Eastern Surfing Championships held each September at Cape Hatteras N.C.
This is the official championship of the East Coast of the United States and is now in its 4th decade.
“ESA has eight competitions a summer, and Sea Isle City is one of them,” said Brian Heritage of Heritage Surf and Sports, 37 and Landis Ave. in Sea Isle (609-263-3033).
“This is the largest amateur surfing organization in the world,” Heritage noted. “The ESA has competitions from Maine to Miami, with districts in each state and competition within age categories for the kids.”
This year’s ESA Surf Competition takes place in at JFK Blvd. and the beach, at 7 a.m. May 30.
