James M. McLaughlin Jr., 74, of Cape May Court House, NJ, passed away unexpectedly on January 16, 2020.Jim was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Capt. (USCG) James M. and May C. McLaughlin. As part of a military family, his childhood was spent moving throughout the country. After attending his first two years of high school at Gonzaga in Washington DC, he graduated from Curtis High School in Staten Island, NY in 1963. Jim was very proud of his service in the Navy and served aboard the USS America in the Mediterranean Sea during the Six-Day War in June 1967. He went on to graduate from Villanova University in 1970 with a degree in history.After college, Jim settled in the area and began his career as a CPA. He worked in Cape May Court House for 40 years and was a partner in the firm Brennan, McLaughlin, Minahan & Co. until his passing. He was the chairman of the Middle Township Zoning Board, on which he had proudly served his community for almost three decades. He was also a longtime member of the Middle Township Planning Board, where he served as vice chairman.Jim purchased his first motorcycle in his 20’s, which started a lifelong passion for riding. He was a member of the Cape Classics Motorcycle Club as well as the Cumberland County HOG Chapter. He loved history and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the area with others. Jim was the “keeper” of the Cape May home that his grandparents purchased 70 years ago. His summers were happily spent on the front porch surrounded by family, friends and neighbors.Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother CDR William T. McLaughlin, USN. He will be forever missed by his daughters Honey (Michael) Pron, Jamie (Rob) Kinelski; grandchildren Henry, Logan and Ruby; sisters Patricia Nicoson and Elizabeth Freer (Vito) Poveromo; brother Joseph R. (Sherrill) McLaughlin; many nieces and nephews; his longtime partner Kamilla Makarova and her family.Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery.
