1879 Map of Cape May Restored Through a New Jersey State Quester Grant

By Press Release

CAPE MAY – (Left to right) President of the local Quester group, Cape Islanders #1133, Judith Gatt and fellow members Sue Wichterman, Pat Stokes, Joan Scutti, Jackie Matkowski, Liz O’Connor, Maryann Gaffney and Jody Cathrall join the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities’ (MAC) Curator, Elan-Zingman Leith for a look at the 1879 map of Cape May that was recently restored thanks to a generous grant from the Questers.
“This Place Matters,” the sign that the Questers are holding, is the result of a partnership between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Questers International, reflecting a shared mission of promoting the preservation of historic projects.
The map, once owned by Dr. Emlen Physick, is now on display in the second floor hallway of the Emlen Physick Estate at 1048 Washington St. It cost 30 cents in the Victorian era, more than a day’s wages for a maid during that time. The Gilt Complex in Avalon completed the restoration, which included piecing the map back together, cleaning the map, matting it and putting it in a new frame. New Jersey has 24 chapters and 400 members of Questers International. Questers chapters span the United States and Canada. The members are lovers of antiques, collectibles and history who encourage an appreciation for antiques and the preservation and restoration of historical landmarks.
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is a multifaceted not-for-profit organization committed to promoting the preservation, interpretation, and cultural enrichment of the Cape May region for its residents and visitors. MAC membership is open to all.
