AVALON – The historic Whitebrier bar and restaurant on 21st Street is under agreement of sale to Philadelphia’s Union League.

In a notice to its members, the League touted the pending acquisition as one that “marks an incredible opportunity to enhance our shore presence and further elevate our member experience.”

The League already owns a seasonal restaurant in Stone Harbor, The Bungalow, and a golf club on Route 9 in Cape May Court House, the Union League National Golf Club.

In its announcement, the League said it has 2,500 members who own residences within 30 minutes of Avalon. The addition of the Whitebrier, the announcement adds, “will significantly enhance our ability to serve members, their families and guests at the shore.”

Plans call for some “thoughtful cosmetic enhancements.” The League hopes to open the bar and restaurant this summer.

The Whitebrier’s current owner, Anthony Zurawski, confirmed the agreement of sale in an Instagram farewell and thank-you to the staff, customers and entertainers and called the purchase “an incredible opportunity for (the Union League) and the people of Avalon.”

In 2002 Zurawski moved the historic Avalon Yacht and Motorboat Club building, which dates to 1913, from its prior location on the bay to 21st Street, where it became the focal point of the current and latest iteration of the Whitebrier.

Generations met, married, partied and dined there. For decades prior to 2002, Zurawski owned and operated the Whitebrier Hotel at 21st Street and the beach, and its name and reputation have long been intertwined in the fabric of Avalon.
