The two world wars destroyed much of the political power of capital, leading to high taxation of the very rich and a widening spectrum of politics and opinion. Now the money and power of the very rich have increased again, and the governments they support seek to crush dissent. We can’t speak truth to power if power controls our words. Power crushes truth. It will always find willing enforcers: no one ever lost money by telling billionaires what they want to hear. Most media today is serving to uphold the rights of wealth and capital, avoiding criticism of the real elites.
