Re: Herald’s op/ed that public employees basically don’t deserve their pensions. Although the paper admits that lawmakers “raid pension funds to balance budgets or fund pet projects” it does not focus on this enough. Every employee in the system contributes monthly. The state is constitutionally obligated to do the same, but only one governor in the last 35 years has done so. Let’s be clear- if the governors had followed the law, the pension system would be totally in the black. We would not be having this discussion.
