Amazon deliberately keeps the true extent of its data centers’ water use from the public, a leaked internal document shows. The biggest owner of data centers in the world, Amazon has hundreds of facilities, with many more in development despite concerns over how much water is needed to cool them. Amazon has never publicly disclosed how much water its server farms use. As a whole, they used 105bn gallons of water in 2021, as much as 958,000 US households, that of a city bigger than San Francisco. The $2.4tn corporation is also building new data centers in some of the world’s driest areas.
