COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton invites the residents of Cape May County to join the 144 members of the Cape May County Medical Reserve Corps. Director Thornton said, “September is Emergency Preparedness Month and a great time to consider becoming a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteer. Medical Reserve Corps units are made up of locally based volunteers who assist their communities during emergencies, such as an influenza epidemic, a chemical spill or an act of terrorism.”
MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, mental health professionals, dentists, veterinarians and epidemiologists. Additionally, other community members such as, interpreters, chaplains, office workers and legal advisors can fill vital support positions.
Health Officer Kevin Thomas added, “In order to mobilize quickly in the event of a public health emergency, many volunteers need to be recruited and trained now so the county will be fully prepared to respond.” In the past, the Medical Reserve Corps has assisted Cape May County in its seasonal flu vaccination campaign, the 2009 H1N1 Flu Pandemic clinics and during Hurricane Irene.
The Cape May County Department of Health is looking for a Few Good Men & Women in the professional and non-professional fields to continue the growth of our Medical Reserve Corps. If you are interested in becoming part of this vital community project, please contact Joan Rowland, MRC Coordinator at 609-463-1225 or visit www.cmchealth.net and click “Join the MRC.”
