An 18-year-old student from Villas attending Louisiana State University was arrested for uploading images of child pornography to the internet using university Wi-Fi.
According to an article that appeared in The Advocate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Amari West was arrested March 5 and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail. He was charged with two felony counts of possession of pornography involving children under the age of 13.
According to the article, which cited a police affidavit, on Sept. 15 West uploaded two videos showing child pornography using the messaging app Kik. Law enforcement was tipped off by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which reached out to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
The article further said the images were uploaded through an account tied to one of West’s email addresses and using an LSU IP address. West allegedly attempted to sell the images to other users in multiple exchanges on the app. Each of the exchanges was documented by Kik, and each also had an IP address tied to LSU.
