Cape May County Medical Reserve Corps Seek Volunteers

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – September is National Preparedness Month! Freeholder Gerald Thornton reminds residents, “That during this month of National Preparedness and the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, it is a time to remember and a time to prepare. The need for public health professionals to mobilize quickly in response to infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters or a bioterrorism event is greater than ever.”
The Cape May County Department of Health has been working diligently to increase the county’s preparedness and response capabilities by recruiting and training Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers. MRC volunteers assist the residents of Cape May County in several ways, both to promote healthy behaviors as well as serve in an emergency.
There are nearly a 150 dedicated volunteers in the Cape May County Medical Reserve Corps. “However, in a public health emergency, we will need hundreds of volunteers. Depending on the situation, we may need to open large-scale clinics that will require many more volunteers. We know that people will be eager to assist in an emergency situation, but it is important for people to sign up now with the MRC and be trained so that they will be fully prepared to respond,” said Health Officer Kevin Thomas.
The Cape May County Department of Health is looking for a Few Good Men & Women, both healthcare professionals and those in non-healthcare fields to continue the growth of the Cape May County Medical Reserve Corps. MRC volunteers will receive free training in emergency response, disaster preparedness, health education and community recovery.
During non-emergency times, MRC volunteers have opportunities to participate in flu vaccination clinics, health promotion activities and emergency preparedness drills.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this vital community project please call 609-465-1225 or visit www.cmchealth.net and click “Join the MRC”. Also, to find out about local public health news and events in Cape May County, “like us” on Facebook or visit capemaycountygov.net.
