PETERSBURG – Some communities like to celebrate Christmas in July, but Upper Township is going to celebrate the Fourth of July in June.

After concerns were expressed about the possibility of the July 4th fireworks being canceled, the township plans to have its Summer Celebration & Fireworks event on Saturday, June 28.

The annual event was nearly called off because of the unavailability of the fireworks vendor on Independence Day. In addition, officials said it was difficult to get volunteers to run the event.

Committeeman Sam Palombo said the early date will give residents an opportunity to celebrate the Fourth without having to interrupt other plans.

“Traditionally, I go to the beach all day on July 4,” Palombo said.

He said he believes the early date for the fireworks will allow more people to participate in the event.

Palombo announced at the last committee meeting that the event would be taking place on Saturday, June 28, beginning at 4 p.m. at Amanda’s Field on Route 50, with a rain date of Sunday, June 29. There will be live music, food trucks, craft vendors and games. Fireworks will begin at dusk.
