COLD SPRING – The driver of a rented U-Haul vehicle left the roadway and struck a mobile home at a camping resort after becoming confused about the location of the brake pedal.

Lower Township Police Department officers were dispatched to Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood, at 669 Route 9, for the report of a U-Haul vehicle striking a mobile home. When the police arrived, there was smoke coming from under the vehicle and all the residents were out of the mobile home.

Police said the U-Haul was able to be driven from the scene, but the Lower Township building inspector determined that the mobile home was unlivable. Sun Retreats staff told police they could move the residents to another site.

The driver of the U-Haul said her daughter asked her to move the vehicle about 5 feet, but when she went to press the brake, she hit the accelerator instead, causing her to strike the mobile home on the opposite side of the street.

There were no injuries, police said.
