PALERMO – Three people were injured and taken to local hospitals after a head-on collision on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

At around 12:25 p.m. on July 26, firefighters responded to a report of a head-on collision in the 800 block of South Shore Road (Route 9) in the Palermo section of Upper Township.

They arrived and found a two-car, head-on collision, with one person trapped in a white Chevy sedan. Another person, from the second vehicle, a RAM 3500 pickup truck, was found on the ground, and a third had managed to get out of the vehicle.

All three people were transported to hospitals either by ground or helicopter.

All Upper Township units were cleared after about one and a half hours; there were no injuries to Upper emergency personnel. The State Police were also on the scene and were conducting an investigation into the accident’s cause.

The first companies dispatched to the scene were the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company, Seaville Fire and Rescue, Tuckahoe Volunteer Fire Company and the Upper Township Division. Two paramedic units from AtlanticCare were present, and a medevac helicopter was requested for the trapped person.

An engine from the Ocean City Fire Department was asked to handle the landing zoning for the helicopter, and an Ocean City Fire Department ambulance transported the third patient.
