The Tooth, the Whole Tooth, and …

Adeline Mauck of Warrenton, Virginia, was walking the beach in Wildwood Crest during the Thanksgiving weekend and found this black serrated shark’s tooth at the water’s edge. In researching it she learned it may have belonged to an ancient shark species, a great white shark, or a juvenile megalodon shark. Ocean currents, storms and erosion likely unearthed the fossil from deep sediment, carrying it to the shore. Shark tooth fossils like this are typically between 10,000 and 20 million years old. There are no current shark breeds with black teeth; such shark’s teeth are considered to be fossilized.
