CAPE MAY – With Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” playing in the background, about two dozen members of Cape May’s Kiwanis Club, it’s Aktion Club, and their family members danced the night away Dec. 19, as they celebrated the holidays. The Aktion Club is an organization that falls under the Kiwanis umbrella that helps people with disabilities.

“It’s all about the social interaction,” Kim Ford, of North Cape May, said. A member of Kiwanis for about 21 years, she heads the club on behalf of the local Kiwanis Club, which has sponsored this special service for adults with disabilities since 2018. There are more than 12,000 members worldwide.

“It’s a great Christmas celebration for the club members, who attend the event with family members and caregivers,” she noted. “They bring food, exchange gifts, and they love to dance.”

With some attendees wearing holiday sweaters and Santa hats, the crowd danced the night away to old-time favorites like Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and newer renditions like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” They enjoyed a potluck dinner exchanged gifts with each other, and received gift cards from the Kiwanians.

Ford said participants live all across the county and enjoy activities like bowling and arts and crafts during their social events. The Club meets monthly, and she said it provides opportunities for members to “make a friend, socialize, go to the movies, and have fun.”

“Their parents are always contributing, too” Ford added. “There were smiles all around,” Ford said. “It took awhile for everyone to get dancing, but once they did, they wouldn’t stop.

“It’s a great event and the attendees always have fun,” Ford noted. “It makes you appreciate life and it’s such a fun event.”
