At the Stone Harbor Council Meeting Aug. 5, Ken Biddick, chair of the council committee on utilities, announced that a 35% failure rate among residential meters has led to an agreement with the vendor who supplied and installed the meters to replace 100% of them. New smart meters were installed throughout the borough in 2022.
Biddick said the company has stepped up and is covering all costs associated with the project. “The borough is paying nothing,” Biddick said in reply to a question from council member Frank Dallahan. Biddick added that the company had identified a manufacturing problem as the cause of the high failure rate.
The process for replacing the meters should not involve any service interruptions, Biddick said. In his reply to Dallahan, Biddick noted that the company that installed the meters was on notice that the borough has begun a review to determine if there has been any revenue loss due to the meter malfunctions.
