SOUDER, DAVID
Jan 29, 1944 – Oct 15, 2024
Captain David A. Souder, 80, of Cape May, NJ passed away peacefully on October 15, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 29, 1944, in Philadelphia, PA, David grew up on Washington Street in Cape May alongside his parents Sallie and Howard Souder and four brothers, Bill, Pack, Howard, and Alfred.
He was a graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School, class of 1962. David followed in the footsteps of his father and became a Delaware River Boat Pilot apprentice. He dedicated 34 years of his life to being a river pilot, a career he took great pride in. Known for his hard work and dependability, he was a steady provider for his family, ensuring they were always well cared for.
He is survived by his cherished wife of sixty-one years, Carolyn Souder (nee Chase), and their four daughters: Kimberlee Brown (Scott), Susan Dunwoody (John), Karen Fournier (Bruce), and Melissa Jones. He was a proud Grandfather of five; Steven Dunwoody (Agnieszka), Justin Dunwoody, Bradley Fournier, Emily Fournier, and Leah Jones. He was a loving great-grandfather to Jacob Dunwoody. David was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Sallie Souder, brothers Bill Burgin, John “Pac” Burgin, and Howard Souder. He is survived by his brother Alfred Souder (Nancy), sister-in-law, Celie Souder, and beloved dog Penny.
David had many hobbies and interests throughout his life including hunting, fishing, boating, wood-working, bowling, darts, horseshoes, billiards, volleyball, and softball. The simple pleasure of a good steak and chilled Dewar's also suited him well. In retirement, David found his true passion after playing a round of golf in Maui, Hawaii with his son-in-law. Upon returning home, he devoted his time to learning the game and became a skilled golfer, earning a club championship in 2009. He was a member of the Wildwood Country Club and Cape May National Golf Club where he played with friends and connected with other golfers who shared in his same passion for the game.
Beyond his hobbies and activities, the well-being of his family was always his top priority. Always lending a helping hand, David took the lead in organizing family vacations, assisting his grandkids with higher education, and helping whenever anyone was in need.
An informal visitation will be held at Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington Street Cape May, NJ on Sunday, October 27th from 12pm-2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in David's memory to the Caper 10 Alumni Association.
