Route 9 is scheduled to remain closed and detoured in both directions near Gerrit Boulevard at milepost 3.2 in Lower Township through February for work on a stormwater facilities restoration project, the state Department of Transportation announced.
The closure was originally scheduled to end in early January but was extended after a drainage pipe collapsed underneath the roadway.
Route 9/Sandman Boulevard north and Route 9/Shore Road south were closed and detoured at milepost 3.2 on Dec. 9. The closures are necessary to restore stormwater facilities, improving drainage and mitigating future flooding events.
The following detours are expected to remain in place through February:
Route 9 north/Sandman Boulevard detour: Motorists on Route 9 north will be directed to turn left onto Seashore Road, then turn right onto Tabernacle Road, back to Route 9.
Route 9 south/Shore Road detour: Motorists on Route 9 south will be directed to turn right onto Tabernacle Road, then turn left onto Seashore Road, back to Route 9.
The work is part of a $7.7 million state-funded maintenance project that will make repairs and restore stormwater facilities in various locations across South Jersey.
Variable messaging signs are being used to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Motorists are encouraged to check DOT’s traffic information website 511nj.org for real-time travel information.
