To the Editor:
Starting when Chris Christie was governor, there was discussion of extending Route 55 to Cape May. This idea was brought up again as a topic for New Jersey campaign promises.
There are environmental factors to be taken into consideration such as the bird sanctuaries and DEP wildlife sanctuaries. There is also not any land left to add such an extension of a highway, which is why it wasn’t built from the beginning.
This type of infrastructure is more expensive rather than restoring the rails that are waiting to be repaired. Restoring the rails would be a cost-affordable and cheaper option for passenger service to reduce congestion and flow of traffic on the Garden State, including road crossings in Rio Grande.
Having rail freight service would improve our economy and help the locals improve our economy and help the local stores obtain better delivery stock. Why extend something that is not there, but instead fix and restore what’s already there?
