WEST WILDWOOD – Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland has appointed a monitor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Police Department in the absence of Police Chief Jackie Ferentz, who is on a leave of absence pending retirement.
Sutherland has appointed Detective Mark Weeks to oversee the department’s operations during the period of leadership transition. He said with Weeks’ extensive background in law enforcement, particularly his experience as a major in the State Police, Weeks is well-suited to provide the necessary guidance during the temporary vacancy.
In a press release issued Tuesday, Jan. 21, the prosecutor said: “This move is aimed at ensuring continuity, maintaining public safety, and fostering accountability during this transition period.”
Sutherland said Weeks would help to “maintain stability and integrity within the department” until “a permanent leadership solution is found.” Currently, Ferentz is one of only two supervisors in the department, the other being Sgt. James Dodd. The department historically has had fewer than 10 officers.
The prosecutor said Weeks would ensure that all personnel adhere to proper protocols and that the department continues to operate in the best interest of the community. Weeks will report directly to Sutherland, providing regular updates on the department’s operations.
Weeks served as a monitor in the Cape May Police Department in 2015 under the late county Prosecutor Robert Taylor. Taylor advised city officials to communicate with Weeks during his appointment, rather than with acting Police Chief Robert Sheehan. Sheehan, who previously held the rank of captain, was appointed acting chief in 2014.
It was later revealed that his appointment was subject to a one-year probationary period, and at the end of the year his appointment was not confirmed. He ultimately retired.
