To the Editor:
Flotilla 83 serving the Avalon, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor and the Wildwoods is making ready for boating season 2015.
While Cape May County endures temperatures near zero and the Cape May Ferry sits idle at her pier due to ice, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla is hard at work getting ready to support the 2015 boating season.
For 75 years, Flotilla 83 Wildwood has been supporting the Coast Guard, performing missions such as on the water safety patrols, boater education, vessel safety examinations and public affairs events. Over the last two years alone, Flotilla 83 members have volunteered more than 8,500 hours, performed nearly 320 vessel examinations, educated some 400 boaters and conducted some 40 on the water patrols.
“In order to be ready to support the needs of the Coast Guard and the general public, we need to plan early,” said Flotilla Commander Scott Supplee. “Snow covered ground and low temperatures cannot get in the way of our preparations if we are to be effective in our efforts come spring.”
Allen Nordt, the public education officer for Flotilla 83 stated, “Our aggressive nine class schedule for Boating Safely this year requires that the logistics be covered early so as to prepare as many boaters as possible for safely operating their water craft.”
This year’s schedule also includes nine significant public events at open houses and special events where boaters can get vessel exams, ask questions and learn the latest safety times, regulations and navigational tips.
After 75 years of service, Flotilla 83 is stronger than ever and is Semper Paratus (always ready) to fulfill its mission. From the bay to the sea, you can count on 83.
