To the Editor:
On many occasions men and women who have become titans in their fields give credit to a public-school teacher somewhere along their educational journey.
Maybe the verbal recognition should come with some money sent to the school to establish a merit system for the great teachers who truly are in the minority.
Teachers’ unions representing teachers want nothing to do with merit pay. Its existence would be rife with politics and favoritism.
I taught in public school for 33 years. I witnessed outstanding teachers each year receive the same scheduled pay raise as the bums simply holding fort until retirement.
College students who have real talent and brains want little to do with taking anemic education courses leading to genteel poverty. When education continues to be financed by taxing property, there will never be enough funds available to make education a sought-after college major.
Business giants contribute millions to hospitals to have their deserving names adorn medical centers. What a pity that same munificence doesn’t take part when it comes to showering money upon the educational system, which they admit publicly played a big part in their rise to financial heights.
