Re: Cape May Officials Frustrated by Old Railroad Tracks

By Thomas Frawley, Wildwood Crest

To the Editor:

It is understandable that some may view the railroad tracks in Cape May as an eyesore, but they are a priceless asset that must be preserved for the future.

I worked in the 1980s to restore and improve service to Cape May, unfortunately without success. Passenger rail can be a key part of a broader transportation strategy, providing travel options that are not subject to the vagaries of roadway traffic and weather conditions and that are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Speaking as an engineer and attorney who works in the industry, perhaps the city manager might consider exploring grant funding to renovate and preserve the rail line, with the intent of bringing back passenger rail service (I’d be happy to provide some pro bono guidance in this regard.).

Speaking as someone who has vacationed in Cape May many times starting in 1963, I cannot help but think about the potential for passenger rail to help the city manage peak roadway traffic periods.

Finally, a word or two about safety. The railroad tracks are private property and are not a public thoroughfare. If you are walking on the tracks, other than at a roadway crossing, you are trespassing. The best way to be safe around the railroad tracks is to stay off them!
