To the Editor:
The New Jersey statute pertaining to lights on bicycles can be found at www.state.nj.us/transportation /commuter/bike/regulations.shtm. But let me include it here: 39:4-10 Lights on Bicycles.
When in use at nighttime every bicycle shall be equipped with: 1) A front headlamp emitting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front; 2) A rear lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the rear; 3) In addition to the red lamp a red reflector may be mounted on the rear.
Too many cyclers, maybe as many as 90 percent in resort towns and on the mainland don’t adhere to the law. Even officers on bikes in Cape May have tiny lights, making it difficult to see them at night. In years past, the cycling police had no lights at all.
In the interest of public safety, the police need to monitor the bicyclists, hand out tickets and impound the bike that is being ridden without proper lighting. I know it wouldn’t be tourist-friendly to impound a visitor’s bike, but it could be better than a serious or fatal injury.
