My Sept. 11, 2001 Story

By Karla Kiefer, Cape May

To the Editor:
Ocean City Historical Museum was populated with several volunteers, including me, on Sept. 11, 2001.
I recall standing on my feet when over the public address radio a broadcast started into the shocking news that the World Trade Center was destroyed.
From the recesses of my mind, I recited New Jersey doctor William Carlos Williams’ poem, Tract.
“I will teach you my townspeople how to perform a funeral …”
We closed the museum and I feared the news. Walking back to my home on the Ocean city beach was an awakening. I imagined our beach being overtaken by enemy forces. The beach was wide open.
To my relief, Ocean City was strong enough. We kept our dignity despite casualties as a nation.
