Mob Mentality Rules

By Casey Higgins, Erma

To the Editor:
The mob mentality is an issue in which people follow the example of one or more people and become influenced by their peers.
Some adapt to their peers and become clones of those around them. Opinions, beliefs, and actions can be shaped by those we surround ourselves with. Everyone gives and takes characteristics from one another.
Individualism has become distant for our society today. Some are influenced by this mob mentality subconsciously; so much so that one day a person could wake up and not even know who they are anymore because they’ve just turned into a mix of other people’s characteristics.
The mob mentality has taken away from personalities of even the most unique people. This has impacted a lot of teenagers.
High schoolers are impacted by social media which has become a major form of mob mentality. When high schoolers walk throughout the hallway they have developed a mindset in which they are always being watched and judged.
When getting ready for the day, an outfit is planned to allow the teen not to be embarrassed or discriminated against. Judgment is a scary thing for all teens.
It has taken over my brain and when doing anything I have that fear of judgment in the back of my head. I feel that this is something that will follow me and other teens throughout our lives.
Even teenagers that may say that they don’t care about other people’s opinions definitely do. There is always something that will impact someone, that others have pressured them into being self-conscious about.
High schoolers have developed a mentality in which they think before every action in order to avoid judgment and when making a decision without thinking all they can think about after is the fear that they are being judged for what they have just done.
The social media accounts in which students choose to follow have given the impression that that’s what students are supposed to look like, act like, and overall become with models on the internet and actors in movies who are actually older than what characters they are portraying.
Avoiding the mob mentality is nearly impossible. The need for teenagers to succumb to the pressures of society and peers has caused such an unhealthy environment for teens.
Teens have become so obsessed with acting the right way and looking the right way that they have lost the ability to realize what the right way to live actually is.
The mob mentality that teenagers have adapted has become a lifestyle of continuous change based on the opinions and actions of those we surround ourselves with.
The small bit of actual personality that a teen may still have is hidden by the adaptations from the mob mentality in which drives a teenager over the edge just to reach these standards. There is always some way in which someone will change to adapt to other people and to conform to the normality of this society.
Overall, the effect mob mentality has on people is a great one. It seems to be inevitable.
It reaches everyone and the pressures of mob mentality are not ones that are easily escaped. Mob mentality takes over in many different forms and ultimately rules and ruins the life of any and all pressured by it.
Everyone has been impacted by this mob mentality and the only question is, will there ever be a way out? I can safely say mob mentality has achieved a complete take over in society.
