Lepers and the Homeless

By Jim Mentz, Cape May

To the Editor:
Are today’s homeless a type of leper? Do we recoil in shock when we see them? Now, as in times past, do we should “unclean!” and dismiss them from our thoughts?
We know that Leprosy represents sin in the Bible, but what of the sin of indifference, or not helping when we are able? Remember in the gospels that “Jesus touched them.” I think that Jesus was showing us that nobody is beyond love and help.
But God is long-suffering towards us. He is not willing to let us perish, but wants all to come to repentance so they might be saved. If that happens, the life of the homeless takes on a new journey and they might become members of society once more.
As the season of Christmas is upon us, let us pray for the homeless that they may get help from anonymous sources and may receive unexpected resources from places yet unknown. Could that be you?
Let us all pray that God will bless the homeless this season.
