Keep Politics Out of Marinas

By George Loper, Rio Grande

To the Editor:
I’m an old native of Cape May, a lovely Victorian resort that offers so many diverse activities. Tourists come to enjoy the restaurants, beaches, and the restored Victorian architecture.
We are also blessed with two fine inlets and a spacious harbor that provides protection from the fierce nor’easters and tropical storms. The harbor is lined with first-class marinas that serve our boating community.
Having owned a boat for many years, the marinas provided me and hundreds of others facilities for our boats. However, in my opinion, there has been an intrusion in the tranquility of the boating community.
This intrusion consists of numerous blue and white Trump flags flying from boats and piles. Other marinas were also invaded.
At one marina, I counted 14 large Trump flags. Obviously, this was an organized effort by Republicans, or some other group.
I was appalled this group would bring politics to our marinas. A marina was one of the places left where boaters talked about fishing or other nautical topics; where fishing trips ended the day with a dock party.
The only flags flown were the American flag or small flags to identify their catches. It was an unspoken tradition to keep politics where they belong… specifically not in our marinas.
