Kayakers, Take Heed

By Marotta

To The Editor:
It was with great sadness that I read of the accidental death while kayaking of the Tuckerton man this past Christmas Eve. This tragedy underscores the importance of kayaking safety and preparedness, especially over the winter months.
Kayakers are at a high risk of hypothermia if not adequately prepared. The body will lose heat at a rate of 30 times faster in the water than on land. Survival time in 40 to 50 degree water without a life vest in street clothes would be less than an hour in such conditions.
The cardinal rules of kayaking are:
Always be attired in a life vest and with the proper clothing. This time of year, a full dry suit with an under layer or at least a wet suit with dry top would be appropriate.
Kayak with a buddy and let someone know where you are going.
Be acutely aware of the weather forecast as conditions can change abruptly.
Be versed in the proper self-rescue techniques along with having the proper gear.
As an avid kayaker, I am always amazed of how easy it is to get into trouble on the water. Using the above suggestions will, hopefully, prevent further needless tragedies.
