To The Editor:
According to your report of Sept. 22, the freeholders have approved the spending of $2,600 to appraise farmland in Middle Township. That surely means they intend to buy it.
In this time of a stringent economy, it seems to me that this is an imprudent time to spend money we don’t have — or will real estate taxes rise again?

(ED. NOTE: On Nov. 9, 1989, voters of this county approved by a 2 – 1 margin a ballot question endorsing the establishment of a trust fund to preserve open space and agricultural land. The trust is funded by a county property tax of one cent per $100 of assessed valuation and generates approximately $1.3 million annually. Since its inception, the program has preserved approximately 3,000 acres of open space and farmland (almost five square miles.)
