Charities Are Hurting Too

By Robin Mackintosh, Avalon

In the words of William Shakespeare, “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day.” Never have Macbeth’s words sounded so familiar or felt so deeply than at this difficult time of isolation, cancellations and disappointments.
We have become used to seeing jobs lost, businesses lost and lives lost.
This letter is to remind the residents and visitors to Cape May County that even the spirit of giving is being damaged one day and one event at a time.
Dozens of popular celebrations, observances and events are being cancelled as this virus takes its toll on daily life.
Unfortunately, local charities are now facing financial shortages as their fundraising efforts are falling victim to cancellations. The Avalon Lions Club has spent more than a decade raising money for more than a dozen Cape May County organizations. We hold annual fundraisers that help the blind, the homeless and the hungry.
This summer will be unlike any other as we look forward to a shortened season of asking for donations from people already financially strapped dealing with this pandemic.
Asking for donations is never easy but this letter is just a reminder that we need your help more than ever this year. Please throw an extra quarter or dollar into our White Cane buckets when you see us. Or write a small check if you can to our charity or any of the others that serve our community.
I know it is a lot to ask but this thing isn’t going to last forever and when it is over we will still be standing but so will the needs of so many others of our neighbors.
Shakespeare wrote tragedies but with your help we are writing the story of a brighter future. Join us this summer.
