Cashless Society?

Letters to the Editor 2019

By Bruce Loversidge, Avalon

To the Editor:
American money is inscribed with the words, “This note is legal tender for all debts public and private.” That is unless you want to park in Stone Harbor where you need a phone, an app, and a connected bank account or credit card to park in the metered parking.
You can’t buy anything at a Phillies game without a card, no cash allowed. You save up to take your kids to a game and can’t buy them a hot dog and a soda without a credit card. A number of places I visited this winter did not accept cash, so my $2 coffee has to be charged.
Everyone in our society does not have a credit/debit card and the refusal to accept cash seems to me to discriminate against many lower income people. It also seems stupid to have to charge 25 cents to my credit card to park for 10 minutes.
I am surprised that this refusal to take the “Legal Tender” is legal and also surprised that someone has not challenged this in court. It is a matter of both civil liberties and civil rights.
