A Call to Action

Letters to the Editor 2019

By Barbara Allison, Erma

To the Editor:
People living in storage units. People living in storage units with their pets. Parents and children living in tents in the woods. Working people living in their cars and sleeping in parking lots. Working people who can’t stay here anymore because they have nowhere to live. Encampments in the woods behind Walmart and a garden center in Rio Grande. Businesses closing and moving out.
Along with this comes crime, property destruction, addiction, and mental illness. It is a public health issue.
Come on, Cape May County! How long will we ignore this problem? How long will it take to figure out how to solve this problem?
There is a solution. Yes, really! It is called affordable housing. It does not exist right now, but it needs to be here.
There are currently no caps on rental prices. There are no affordable properties available. The need is great. The problem is getting worse.
Cape Hope is holding meetings every Thursday at 4 p.m. to address this issue. Everyone is invited.
This is our community. This is our problem. No one is stepping up to solve it. It is up to all of us to do something about it. We need land with city sewers and water and money. Help us find it.
