There are probably people living in Paris today who “brag” about not ever having been to the Eiffel Tower, and people in Rome who like to talk about never entering the Coliseum.
That is the way of “locals;” they for some reason like to pretend disdain or are genuinely too busy to enjoy the famous sights that others come many miles to see and appreciate.
My husband and I don’t fit into that category of “locals.” I know we can’t really be locals because we were not born here — perhaps another category of Cape dwellers. Let us call ourselves not locals or shoobies, but Finally Attaining Nearly Native Interest Status — “FANNIES.”
Having lived in this county since 1974, I think it is about time we identify ourselves in a way that says something about our longevity but also our lack of honest-to-goodness nativeness. So here we are “Fannies,” out to see and do whatever others come here to see and do.
All of that lead-in was to tell you locals, Fannies and Shoobies alike, there is a great new attraction in town. Wildwood Crest has rehabilitated the old Fishing Pier in a grand way. The old fishing pier has had no water under it because of the tremendous growth of our beach, so now it’s been rehabbed for the general public.

Thanks to Commissioner Cabrera, and Mayor Groon, who had the vision to imagine what a great thing it would be to walk out and view the shoreline and ocean from such an elevated spot, we now have a wonderful new attraction. Friday night fireworks viewing from there must be fantastic; early morning coffee and late night stargazing from the Fishing Pier is worth abandoning the local “we don’t do that here” attitude.
(Joyce could not see it either but I like you am a good sport and can applaud a good idea. Besides, you brought us the wonderful beach walkway)
Now that you are up walking or biking: go to the end of the island in North Wildwood and see the most beautiful free gardens in the county — those at the lighthouse. Can you believe all we have right here at home?
