The health care system in America, while the envy of the world for quality, is in need of overhaul. You have focused the nation on seeking solutions to its drawbacks and in the process have demonstrated to our enemies that American leadership is capable of holding fast in order to achieve a desired goal.
This demonstration makes us less vulnerable to foreign military and economic attack by maintaining in their minds a healthy respect for the historically established drive and tenacity of America leadership, the value of which cannot be underestimated.
Was this success achieved in a way consistent with our traditions and values? No; it ran roughshod over them. Accordingly the bill fell short of achieving its potential of preserving what is good while addressing our current health care system’s drawbacks.
However Rome was not built in a day either. While you may feel you have achieved your goal, many, and I disagree. It is unfortunate that you, as Democrats, hold so much power, which enabled you to lock out the ideas of the other party and the people whom they represent.
America’s strength is founded on working together to address her problems. Thus it behooves the nation to strengthen the arm of the other party in the coming election this November, reopen negotiations, and address the shortfalls of the bill just passed.
While it is unfortunate that we currently lack a broad-based, bipartisan health-care bill, this problem is not irreparable. We still have time to make needed repairs before the elements of the one just passed become cemented in stone.
