Record numbers participated in Cape May County Library events this summer.
The fall season should prove the same, as many great programs are being offered. Here’s just a few.
The county library is thrilled to announce the continuation of “Paws to R.E.A.D.”
R.E.A.D. is a Reading Education Assistance Dogs Program, in which handlers allow children to read to registered therapy dogs that are tested and trained for temperament, skills and health. The children love it, and so do the dogs!
“Paws to R.E.A.D.” will be held at the Court House branch on Mondays, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, and Nov. 27.
Children wanting to read can signup at 6 p.m. in the library’s Children Room.
The dogs arrive at 6:30 p.m. and children begin to read shortly thereafter.
Children read in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment allowing children who are reluctant to read, to discover that “Man’s best friends” are willing to listen.
Therapy dogs sit quietly and calmly while children read aloud to them, permitting children to become more confident about reading.
Children who have participated in “Paws to R.E.A.D.” have shown dramatic gains in reading levels and impressive improvement in self-esteem and other social skills, as well.
