One of the members of the Cape Issues team is Larry Kratzer, who is also president of Coalition of Community Organizations, an organization which meets monthly and brings in interesting speakers on issues of community interest. This month, Ed Grant, the Cape May County director of operations spoke to the group about his first year on the job.
This man has been at the county for over 30 years and obviously has been itching to get his hands into the operation and change a number of things he is very passionate about. It was clear to us in the room that he is loving his job – most people love a job when they know what they are doing and can see that their efforts are helping others.

Ed Grant is as eager as a tea-party patriot
to trim the size of government and
make it efficient, yet his warm heart
for people in need is every bit as obvious.

When you are not in government and stand on the street and listen to people rail about government being so out of touch with the common man’s life, those people certainly are not talking about Ed Grant. He is as eager as a tea-party patriot to trim the size of government and make it efficient, but his warm heart for people in need is every bit as obvious.
He is an engaging speaker and pulls few punches, which is rare and refreshing. He is so open, it is hard to believe that he actually was an elected official before he joined the staff ranks. May I encourage you to read our lightly edited version of his presentation in this week’s edition of the print copy of the Herald, and also online.
If you are a government employee and don’t know this man, you will benefit from reading his words getting to know him better. If you are a non-government taxpayer, reading his thoughts should give you encouragement.
Is what is happening in Cape May County government indicative of what is taking place in our municipalities and townships? I certainly do hope so.
