WILDWOOD — A bomb threat closed a portion of the Boardwalk, Friday, Aug. 8, but it resulted in no threat being found.
The Wildwood Police Department was notified of a bomb threat directed at a particular business in the 3300 block of the Boardwalk. Due to the nature of the call, the immediate area was sealed off, and the area was searched using explosive-detecting canines.
“After an extensive and thorough search of this area, no threats to public safety were located and it was reopened to the public,” the WPD said through its Facebook page.
Wildwood Deputy Mayor Steve Mikulski, the city’s director of public safety, confirmed that the bomb threat was to Franconi’s Pizza, located at 3318 Boardwalk. The restaurant has been the target of criticism lately after two Nazi emblems were spotted on a refrigeration unit inside the restaurant. The stickers were among many others, some carrying political messages using profane language, and some heavy metal band stickers. NJ Advanced Media reported that a number of the stickers, including the Nazi stickers, had been removed. Multiple sources reported Franconi’s declined to comment on the matter.
Mikulski said he could not comment on whether the stickers were responsible for the bomb threat, but said he was notified of the threat within minutes after it was received. He said K-9 units from the WPD, the Wildwood Crest Police Department, and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the search, which included the immediate area of the restaurant, including under the boardwalk. The City of Wildwood Fire Department also participated in the response.
Police said the incident is under investigation and anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact the WPD Department Detective Division at 609-522-0222. Wildwood police also expressed thanks to agencies that assisted with the response: Wildwood Fire Department, Cape May County Sheriffs Office, and the Wildwood Crest Police Department.
