Wildwoods Unlock Beaches, Kite, Hopes Fly High

North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello

By Rachel Rogish

WILDWOOD ─ “Tourism officials foresee the potential for the 2016 Wildwoods’ season, with the help of an improved economy, new free events, and attractions, festivals and concerts to be even bigger than years past if the weather cooperates.”
Those words, in a recent release from GWTIDA (Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority), found fulfillment in sunny skies, ocean breezes, and the laughter of children as the beaches officially opened May 27.
Cameramen from Channel 6 News, members of the Greater Wildwood and Cape May County chambers of commerce, GWITIDA, and local officials, gathered at noon to talk about beach safety, upcoming events, and the reason for the Memorial Day weekend.
Executive Director-CFO John Siciliano of GWTIDA said the reason “We can have festivals and events like this” was because of the sacrifice of men and women who died in defense of national freedom.
Siciliano opened the ceremony and reminded all that Wildwood has the “widest, cleanest, and safest beaches” and thanked city employees and the lifeguards who work diligently to maintain a safe environment for visitors and residents alike.
Siciliano recognized second-grade classes from the island’s elementary schools. “We have our Falcons, Little Warriors, and Cougars,” Siciliano said. He also made mention of “a very special guest” in attendance: Dr. Benjamin Franklin, who came from Philadelphia to help demonstrate kite flying in the Wildwoods International Kite Festival.
The 93rd National Marbles Tournament will also commence in Wildwood, and local champions will represent the state.
Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano turned serious as he instructed the children to “listen to their parents and the lifeguards” while on the beach this summer.
“They (lifeguards) are in charge of the beach,” Troiano said. Troiano wished everyone a happy Memorial Day and to take a moment to remember and pray for servicemen and women.
North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello concurred with Troiano’s statement. Rosenello wished for young people to “honor those who died in service to our country.”
Rosenello also recognized Miss Oceania and announced her status as valedictorian of the Class of 2016 and her plan to attend university in Florida.
“Where are my cougars?” Wildwood Crest Deputy Mayor Joyce Gould asked. After a cheer from the second-grade class, Gould urged the children to “Be careful” and to not ride their bikes on busy streets. “They (tourists) don’t look where they’re going,” Gould said.
Before beaches were officially unlocked, Siciliano closed the ceremony saying “Enjoy the freedoms that we have” and remember the “people still in harm’s way.”
