Tropical Storm Hanna Departs Leaving New Beach

By Lauren Suit

CAPE MAY — Oh, the difference one day can make.
While Tropical Storm Hanna may have chased away some visitors to Cape May on Sept. 6, the storm did leave behind a gift, a new stretch of beach on what would normally be the waterside of the Third Avenue Jetty.
A 25-foot wide swatch of sand now occupies what used to be a favorite spot for surfers.
The jetty which is normally awash during high tide, now sits more than 20 feet from the surf. It remains to be seen if subsequent high tides will reclaim the new stretch of beach. Visitors were sitting on the news strand of beach at 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 7.
Elsewhere in the county, the storm downed trees and caused arcing wires on Sept. 6 as it swept northward into New England.
